From Greenpeace’s Archives, an article “Toxic Legacies: Toxic Hotspots in Clark and Subic”: “After almost a century of military presence in its former colony, the Philippines, the United States was forced to withdraw from its bases, including Clark Air Base and Subic Naval Base, in the Philippines after the Philippine Senate rejected an extension of the RP-US bases treaty in 1991. When the Americans left Clark and Subic, it soon became apparent that they also left behind a lethal legacy of toxic wastes brought about by irresponsible use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials including persistent organic pollutants such as Poly Chlorinated Biphenyl’s (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides.”
