“INDEPENDENCE DAY”

Mom arrived in New York City
a day before July fourth
one year since I last saw her

in her travel bag a red bible
a handful of caraili bush for diabetes
and painful cramps a sou-sou book
and a red solo

later in bed I hugged mammie tight
we talked all night, then she said
chile, I missed the roar of yuh big mouth most

I din tell plenty people I was going away yuh kno
din want nobody to put goat mouth on me
and I never reach

we fell apart with crazy laughter
