the beauty beyond
I too tire of the blonde trance
parapets and horse-drawn paths
upon which our story’s cast
of flat characters flee to wedded ends
Imagination travels further: it must
devour cliché as a desert creature
perhaps a jackal-headed Beast
guards a blue lotus and not the rose

Jennie Frost is a Jewish, Appalachian poet from Maryville, TN. She is a three-time winner of the Curtis Owens prize and beginning in January, she will serve as the Writer in Residence at the Sundress Academy for the Arts.
