2016 AWP Events

It’s that time of year again for AWP! Our authors have some awesome events lined up this year that we hope you will stop by and check out.

First and foremost, Sundress will be holding a night of three celebratory readings!

First help us launch our new poetry anthology, Political Punch, with readings by Timothy Liu, Cam Awkward-Rich, Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, Lee Ann Roripaugh, and Chen Chen!

Following this, celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Best of the Net Anthology with readings by previous contributors and judges including Traci Brimhall, Matt Hart, Emily Jungmin Yoon, Alix Olin, Nicole Walker, and Sarah Einstein!

Finally, celebrate Sundress’s Sweet 16 with readings by our authors, including Fox Frazier-Foley, Amorak Huey, Letitia Trent, Jill Khoury, Saba Syed Razvi, Jessica Rae Bergamino, and M. Mack!

Friday, March 31st at 7-10pm

This event will be a series of readings and performances that explores the limits of the body, aims toward transformation, seeks plants and animals as models or collaborators, expresses saturated or hysterical emotion, embraces femme aesthetics, and moves toward the horizon of queerness.

How Gay Is This Book?

Thursday, March 31st 1:30-2:45pm

Students and instructors often differ in their interpretation of what constitutes a queer text. Considering the varieties of gender identification and the spectrum of sexual orientation, as well as what it means to enact a queer pedagogy in both form and content of the classroom, panelists explore the contemporary pitfalls and joys of helping to shape students’ engagement with LGBTQ literature. Panelists read from potentially contested queer texts as well as discuss pedagogical practices.

20th Anniversary Macondo Reading

Saturday, April 2nd 7-9pm

Come celebrate the 20-year legacy of the Macondo Writers Workshop. This reading of alumni (Macondistas) will honor the workshop created by author Sandra Cisneros. Learn how you can be part of the Macondo community. A reception and reunion will follow.

Reimagining Literary Spaces

Friday April 1st, 1:30pm

Literary journals must go beyond stating a commitment to inclusivity and diversity. To change the literary landscape and make public more work by POC, LGBTQ, women,working class and differently abled communities, journals must reimagine the traditional structure of submissions or even the role of literary spaces. Editors from Apogee, The Offing, Yes Poetry, Luna Luna Mag, Voicemail Poems and The James Franco Review will share their experience of how they re-visioned journals or differently approached the editing process.
