The Wardrobe’s Best Dressed: We Ran Rapturous by Shannon Sankey

HAIR

A tree will catch a snapped twig in the
fork of a healthy branch, god forbid it
reach the earth. The twig will balance
there for seasons. It is the same with
me, in the shower, with—what unit? a
handful?—a violence of curls, several
ounces of dull hair in my fists (horror
of lifting one’s own limb, horror of
autonomous weight). I do a terrible
math: what fraction of the whole? A
strand on the tweed coat of a lover
is romantic. I am not talking about
that, nor the common imposition
of a choked drain. I am telling you
about the tree that collects its ejected
parts, the tree that postures for
passersby a crooked kind of flowering.

BOWEL REST

At once I am slack-jawed and suckling,
soft-toothed and dumb-tongued, gnawing at nothing.

I draw liquid protein through a plastic straw,
sick of my own sounds in a house with no days.

My mother ransacks the kitchen of still-good boxes and bags,
stacks cans on the countertops, steals away every stale thing,

and I open the refrigerator door just to stand
in the bleached-blue, brilliant, annihilating light.

I watch her tear down
her iridescent architecture
when she goes
hungry in the dark.
She gathers back
her own bright protein
with almost arms
into her self, into
her somewhere mouth.

and it has to be enough.

BROWN HOUSE AUBADE

Here, my work was tenderness. The pulse of
dark beans to loam. Heavy carafe, heap and spit.
My work: a queue of cups on her windowsill.
If she wouldn’t drink, fine. I left them to cool.
Here was my mother dying, her bed a boat on
her breath. I thought I might reanimate her. I
knew vaguely of her vertebrae: a herniation:
fentanyl patches: a gun in a bag and a box of
bullets. It was beside the point. I believed the
brown house would kill her. She slept for days
without intermission, without memory of me.
Did I ever see her face that year? Not in the
stories I tell myself. In dreams, I go back inside,
but I cannot find her. Her door is locked. There
is only a girlchild whispering to the dog. She
pauses, sensing me, but she never turns to look.

Sundress Holler Salon on Saturday, June 8th!

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to host a new Holler Salon with a poetry reading and dinner at Firefly Farms. An extension of our award-winning Sundress Reading Series, Holler Salon aims to encourage conversation and collaboration between creative individuals in a variety of disciplines. The event, to be held Saturday, June 8th from 6-10 p.m., will be free and open to the public and will feature poets Emari DiGiorgio, Shannon Sankey, Muriel Leung, and Monica Brashears.

Emari DiGiorgioEmari DiGiorgio is the author of Girl Torpedo, the winner of the 2017 Numinous Orison, Luminous Origin Literary Award, and The Things a Body Might Become. She’s the recipient of the Auburn Witness Poetry Prize, the Ellen La Forge Memorial Poetry Prize, the Elinor Benedict Poetry Prize, RHINO’s Founder’s Prize, and a poetry fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. She’s received residencies from the Vermont Studio Center, Sundress Academy of the Arts, and Rivendell Writers’ Colony. She teaches at Stockton University, is a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Poet, is the Senior Reviews Editor for Tupelo Quarterly, and hosts World Above, a monthly reading series in Atlantic City, NJ.

Muriel Leung

Muriel Leung is the author of Bone Confetti, winner of the 2015 Noemi Press Book Award. A Pushcart Prize nominated writer, her writing can be found in The Baffler, Cream City Review, Gulf Coast, The Collagist, Fairy Tale Review, and others. She is a recipient of fellowships to Kundiman, VONA/Voices Workshop and the Community of Writers. She is the Poetry Co-Editor of Apogee Journal. She also co-hosts the blood-jet writing hour podcast with rachelle cruz and mt vallarta. Currently, she is a Dornsife Fellow in Creative Writing and Literature at the University of Southern California. She is from Queens, NY.

 

 

Monica Brashears

Monica Brashears is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and is entering Syracuse University in August for an MFA in fiction. She has a double-major in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and Africana Studies. Her literary diet consists of Black Literature with a pinch of Southern Folklore. She is also a recipient of the Robert A. Burke Award for fiction, Eleanor Burke Award for nonfiction, Michael Dennis Award for poetry, and Margaret Artley Woodruff Award . She gets down to any music with flavor and really enjoys the company of cats. Some of Monica’s favorite things are as follows: fresh popcorn, full moons, and vanilla perfume.

 

 

 

 

While dinner is provided, attendees are invited to BYOB.

The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is an artists’ residency that hosts workshops, retreats, and residencies for writers, actors, filmmakers, and visual artists. All are guided by experienced, professional instructors from a variety of creative disciplines who are dedicated to cultivating the arts in East Tennessee.
