The Sundress Academy for the Arts Announces December Reading Series

The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is pleased to announce our readers for the December installment of our virtual reading series. The event will take place on Wednesday, December 30th, 2020, 7:00-8:00 EST via Zoom. Join us at http://tiny.utk.edu/sundress (password: safta).

féi hernandez (b.1993 Chihuahua, México) is an Inglewood-raised immigrant trans non-binary visual artist, writer, and healer. They have been published in Poetry, Oxford Review of Books, Frontier, NPR’s Code Switch, BreakBeat Poets Volume 4: LatiNEXTPANK Magazineamongst others. féi is the author of Hood Criatura (Sundress Publications, 2020). féi collects Pokémon plushies.

Michael Credico is the author of Heartland Calamitous (Autumn House Press). His fiction has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Denver Quarterly, DIAGRAM, Hobart, New Ohio Review, NOÖ Journal, Puerto del Sol, Quarterly West, and others. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio. 

Emma Ruth Wilson (she/her) is a poet from Central Illinois. Her work has appeared in Berkeley Poetry Review, Echoverse,and others. 

Sundress Academy for the Arts presents: A Virtual Reading Series

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is proud to present “A Virtual Reading Series” on June 24th, 2020 from 7-8PM EST on Zoom with Ashley Elizabeth, Ever Jones, and Cy Ozgood! Access the event at tiny.utk.edu/sundress. The password is sundress.

Ashley Elizabeth is a writing consultant, teacher, and poet. Her works have appeared in Rigorous, yell/shout/scream, and SWWIM, among others. Her chapbook, you were supposed to be a friend, is now available from Nightingale & Sparrow. When Ashley isn’t serving as assistant editor at Sundress Publications, teaching, or freelancing, she habitually posts on Twitter and Instagram (@ae_thepoet), watching way too many dog and food videos. She lives with her partner in Baltimore, MD.

Ever Jones (they/them) is a queer/trans writer, artist, & instructor based in Seattle. They are the author of three poetry collections, nightsong (Sundress Publications), Wilderness Lessons (FutureCycle Press), & Primitive Elegy (alice blue books). They were a finalist for terrain.org’s 2013 poetry contest and the grand prize winner of the Eco-Arts Awards in 2014. Ever is a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Washington in Tacoma & teaches at Richard Hugo House. Cy Ozgood is a queer poet and witch living in Wisconsin. They are the author of several chapbooks including Cynthia (forthcoming from The Magnificent Field, 2020) and Girl Tramp (Horse Less Press, 2016). Sundress Reading Series Opens for Applications

From August 2020 to January 2021, the Sundress Reading Series will be conducted online via Zoom. Applications to participate as a reader are available and the deadline to apply is June 30th.

The Sundress Reading Series is an award-winning literary reading series usually hosted on-ground in Knoxville, TN, just miles from the Great Smoky Mountains. An extension of Sundress Publications and the Sundress Academy for the Arts, the Sundress Reading Series features nationally recognized writers in all genres from around the US while also supporting local and regional nonprofits. 

We are currently curating our fall reading series schedule on August 26, September 30, October 28, November 18, and December 30, and January 27. Our readings take place the last Wednesday of every month from 7-8PM EST through the online platform of Zoom.  

We are currently seeking readers with books recently released–or to be released in 2020– with an emphasis on marginalized voices especially BIPOC writers, trans and nonbinary writers, and writers with disabilities. To apply to read for the fall, send 6-8 pages of poetry or 8-15 pages of prose, a 100-word bio, CV (optional), and preferred reading dates to sundresspublications@gmail.com. Please make sure the subject line reads “Reading Series Application + Your Name.” 

We will make every effort possible to contact those chosen by July 15th. While we are currently unable to pay our readers, authors’s work will be promoted on the Sundress Academy for the Arts social media platforms both during and preceding the event.

Sundress Reading Series Presents: Tanque R. Jones, Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick, and Erica Wright


Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to welcome Tanque R. Jones, Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick, and Erica Wright for the August installment of our reading series. The reading will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 27, at a NEW location:
Hexagon Brewing Co., located at 1002 Dutch Valley Dr. STE 101, Knoxville, TN, 37918. The Sundress Reading Series is free and open to the public.

Tanque R. Jones Headshot (2)Tanque R. Jones was one of the first poets to receive an MFA from the University of Tennessee in 2014. Her poems have appeared in Connecticut River Review, Colere, West Trade Review, and Clackamas Literary Review. Her first book, Woman in Transition, was published by WordTech Communications in 2016. In this sultry, hard-hitting collection, the poet is a truth-teller, speaking of race and class in East Tennessee, embodying strength and honor.

 

Shannon E Hardwick

Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick’s work has appeared in Salt Hill, Stirring, Versal, The Texas Observer, Devil’s Lake, and Four Way Review, among others. She is listed as a contributor of both poetry and prose in A Shadow Map: An Anthology of Survivors of Sexual Assault published by Civil Coping Mechanisms. Hardwick has chapbooks out with Thrush Press and Mouthfeel Press, and serves as the poetry editor for The Boiler Journal. Before Isadore is her first full-length collection.

 

Erica WrightErica Wright is the author of the poetry collections All the Bayou Stories End with Drowned (Black Lawrence Press, 2017) and Instructions for Killing the Jackal (Black Lawrence Press, 2011). Her poems have appeared in Crazyhorse, Denver Quarterly, Gulf Coast, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. She is the poetry editor at Guernica Magazine as well as an editorial board member of Alice James Books. Her latest novel is The Granite Moth (Pegasus, 2015).

His poetry has appeared in Blast Furnace, Connotation Press, Gingerbread House, Rappahannock Review, and elsewhere. In his free time, Chris likes to drink whisky and smoke cigarettes with older women.

Stephanie Lee Phillips is a writer, photographer, and graduate student who can’t seem to stop being a barista in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the two years since graduating from UT, she has worked with Sundress Academy for the Arts and swiftly avoided questions about her future from her parent’s friends. She is pleased to finally get to say that she will be studying fiction at the University of Southern Mississippi this fall where she will finally try crawfish.

Luke Marinac studies and works at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His poetry has appeared in Polaris, The Siren, Unlikely 2.0, and North Central Review. He believes bike repair belongs in the living room, and enjoys the gamboling through the wild countryside of the Smokey Mountains.

SAFTA Reading Series: TA Noonan and Marcel Brouwers

KNOXVILLE, TN – Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA), a branch of Sundress Publications, is pleased to announce an upcoming reading from writers TA Noonan and Marcel Brouwers. Part of the SAFTA Reading Series, both writers will be reading from their collections, which will be for sale after the event during a meet and greet with the authors.

 The event is free and will be held at The Birdhouse, at 800 N 4th Ave in Knoxville on Sunday, June 22, at 3:00PM.

T.A. Noonan is the author of several books and chapbooks, most recently four sparks fall: a novella (Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, 2013) and, with Erin Elizabeth Smith, Skate or Die (Dusie Kollektiv, 2014). Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Reunion: The Dallas Review, West Wind Review, Hobart, Ninth Letter, and Phoebe, among others. A weightlifter, crafter, priestess, and all-around woman of action, she serves as the Associate Editor of Sundress Publications, Founding Editor of Flaming Giblet Press, and Literary Arts Director for the Sundress Academy of the Arts.

Marcel Brouwers is the author of the chapbook, The Rose Industrial Complex (Finishing Line Press, 2009). He lives in Knoxville, TN, with his wife, LA Hoffer, and works at the University of Tennessee. A lecturer in the English Department, he is currently the Acting Director of the Writing Center and teaches creative writing, literature, and composition classes. His first full-length poetry collection, The Old Cities, was released by Sundress Publications in 2012.
