Half/Slice
I’ve tried to tear the Southern twang
from my throat, but
my American tongue is heavy meat
that can no longer fold
around the words
of my mother’s country.
Like Solomon’s babe,
I beg to be claimed.
Neither the East
nor the West
will speak for me:
“Call any land your home
but ours.”
