Sundress Academy for the Arts Presents “Writing Fandom”

The Sundress Academy for the Arts is excited to present “Writing Fandom,” a workshop led by Jackie Hedeman on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025 from 6:00-7:30 PM EST. This event will be held over Zoom. Participants can access the event at tiny.utk.edu/sundress (password: safta).

For whatever reason, there’s a piece of media embedded in your brain: the movie that seemed to be speaking directly to you, the TV show episode that haunted you for weeks, the book whose characters feel aspirational, the song that still reminds you of that one person. In this generative creative nonfiction workshop, we will explore how being a fan can fuel the way we understand ourselves. Inspired by the pop culture essays of Hanif Abdurraqib and Carmen Maria Machado, and anthologies like It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror and Critical Hits: Writers Playing Video Games, we will figure out how to balance exploration of a pop culture fascination with exploration of the self.

Jackie Hedeman is a queer Midwesterner. She holds an MFA from The Ohio State University. Her work has appeared in Fugue, Electric Literature, Autostraddle, Entropy, The Offing, and elsewhere. With Molly Olguín, she is the co-creator of The Pasithea Powder, a sci-fi, epistolary audio drama. Find her at www.jacquelinhedeman.com

While there is no fee to participate in this workshop, those who are able and appreciative may make donations directly to Jackie Hedeman via Venmo: @JackieHedeman or PayPal: @JHedeman

This event is brought to you  by a grant provided by the Tennessee Arts Commission
