This selection, chosen by guest curator Addie Tsai, is from Look Alive by Luiza Flynn-Goodlett, released by Southeast Missouri State University Press in 2021.
Rage
Steam slips between lips as I suck its wad
in my cheek, then taste iron, bit tongue.
It won’t be tamed and flown, hawk-like
shadow scattering mice, yet I’m fond of
where it first entered—the centipede scar,
staple-marks scurrying up my left eyebrow.
Children reach to stroke it. Soon, all these
hairballs will be coughed up, fuse as a wick,
awaiting only a spark, whatever strikes next.
