Sundress Reading Series Presents Katharine Johnsen, Hank Backer, and L.A. Hoffer

The Sundress Reading Series is thrilled to welcome Katharine Johnsen, Hank Backer, and L.A. Hoffer for the January installment of our reading series! The event will take place Sunday, January 22nd , from 2 to 3 PM at Bar Marley.

Katharine Johnsen received her MFA in creative writing as the Bernice Kert Fellow at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and is the recipient of a Sewanee Writers’s Conference scholarship and a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize. Her poems have recently appeared or are forthcoming in Five Points, Southern Indiana Review, American Literary Review, Tupelo Quarterly, and elsewhere.

Hank Backer teaches at the University of Tennessee. He recently graduated from Georgia State University’s creative writing program, where he worked as an editor for Five Points and New South. He’s been previously published in Red Paint Hill, Loose Change, The Rectangle, and Sixty Six: A Journal of Sonnet Studies.

L.A. Hoffer grew up on the state line between Tennessee and Virginia and writes about it and other places. Her fiction has been published in various journals, including Blue Mesa Review and Iron Horse Literary Review, as well as the anthology, A Cast of Characters and Other Stories. Sometimes, she works on a nonfiction book about her son.

The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) is an artists’ residency on a 45-acre farm in Knoxville, Tennessee, that hosts workshops, retreats, and residencies for writers, actors, filmmakers, and visual artists. All are guided by experienced, professional instructors from a variety of creative disciplines who are dedicated to cultivating the arts in East Tennessee.
