IV.
Life is very surprising,
isn’t it?

A slippery fish,
brutally finned.

V.
The dead are kind.
Strange, how far
they’ll come
to tell you what
you are.
The river boils
in my bones.

VI.
This blue field:
something handed down.

I know the way.
I know the water
will bear me
away and back, loving
what is.

S.B. Ferguson is a Ph.D. Fellow in Poetry at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “River Rise” is her first chapbook.
