The Wardrobe’s Best Dressed: Sarah Sadie’s “Do-It-Yourself Paper Airplanes”

The Map of Deep

First we re-named the four directions stitch,
garlic, shy and dream. I live in stitch, and thread
my voice across wires, cables, space, the moons
in my fingernails shine and wax full
over this landscape made up of secrets, sinkholes,
caves and underground streams, seasonal
as ash trees. Meet me here, you texted, roadsides blown
with chicory, goldenrod, owls you’ll never see
and hawks you will, wheeling above the swooping
murmurations of starlings, bees that are angry
and hungry and dying, crawling into the last asters.
You took a picture to show me, but no map can capture,
no picture offer the smoke from chimneys spinning out
into October’s blue. If there is any lesson here,
it is wheel and turn and wave, incessant yearn
and tumble, the earth spinning out from under, ever.
